International Bridges Crossborder Survey (IBCS)

Understanding Crossborder Travel Challenges

Increasing security measures, longer queues, and heightened wait times have led to significant frustration for crossborder travelers and resulted in lost sales for merchants and service providers, particularly for retailers who rely on purchases from Mexican visitors. Despite these challenges, there has been little systematic analysis of crossborder travel activities or the effects of bridge delays.

Our Collaborative Research Initiative

In response to this gap, the City of El Paso International Bridges Department (IBD) and El Colegio de la Frontera Norte (COLEF) have joined forces to conduct comprehensive research.

Key Objectives:

  1. Informing Policymakers: Provide regular social and expenditure characteristics of crossborder travelers.
  2. Monetary Impact Analysis: Estimate the economic effects of purchases made by crossers within the regional economy.

Through face-to-face surveys and input-output analysis, we aim to shed light on this critical area and inform better decision-making for our region.
